August Wilson's Fences

August Wilson's Fences at The Forum Theatre - KS

August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Fences arrives at The Forum Theatre on Thursday, November 5, 2026 at 8:00 PM with the weight of 1957 Pittsburgh, backyard arguments, and a family trying to survive what America promises versus what it delivers. Troy Maxson was a Negro League star locked out of the majors, and that bitterness shapes every choice he makes as a father.

Troy now hauls garbage and raises Cory, a son who sees his own shot at playing ball professionally. The collision between Troy's hard-won cynicism and Cory's hope creates tension that makes you forget you are watching actors. Rose holds the family together while the men orbit in anger and love. These are not archetypes. They are people you recognize from your own life.

Theatre gives you what streaming never can: the shared intake of breath when a line lands, the uncomfortable silence when truth gets spoken out loud. The New York Post said it was one of the richest experiences I have ever had in the theatre, transfixed rather than simply moved. You watch actors inhabit Wilson's language in real time, with the cast working through the characters' anger, tenderness and frustration in front of you.

You can leave thinking about your own father, your own son, your own fence. Bring someone who appreciates a play that leaves room for disagreement. Find ticket options for Fences at The Forum Theatre in Wichita for the Nov 5, 2026 performance.
