August Wilson's Fences

August Wilson's Fences at The Forum Theatre - KS

When a former Negro leagues baseball star's bitterness collides with his son's ambitions, every word carries the weight of dreams deferred and family bonds stretched to breaking. August Wilson's Fences unfolds in 1957 Pittsburgh, where Troy Maxson works as a garbage man and wrestles with the major league career that never came.

Aaron Profit takes on Troy Maxson, a character whose anger and frustration take a toll on his wife Rose and son Cory. When Cory seeks his own athletic future, the collision between father and son becomes the engine driving Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning script. One New York Post critic wrote about being transfixed rather than simply moved, describing one of the richest experiences in theatre.

The Forum Theatre stages this production on Thursday, November 12, 2026 at 8:00 PM, one performance in a run spanning late October through mid-November. Live theatre puts you in the room where Troy's pride, rage, and twisted love play out without edits or second chances. Watch the pauses and glances as closely as the arguments; they reveal what the family struggles to say aloud.

Wilson's script explores what happens when survival and living pull in opposite directions, when exclusion from opportunity shapes every family decision for generations. You experience the collision of ambition and protection, hope and disappointment, all compressed into the space between parents and children at a single American dinner table.
