August Wilson's Fences

August Wilson's Fences at The Forum Theatre - KS

Troy Maxson hauls garbage through 1957 Pittsburgh, but his mind never left the baseball diamond where segregation stole his prime. August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama comes to live theatre at The Forum Theatre in Wichita on Saturday, November 14, 2026 at 8:00 PM, where the intimacy of the stage turns family tensions into visceral emotional experiences.

Wilson explores bitterness without apology. Troy's exclusion from the major leagues during his prime poisons his relationship with son Cory, who wants his own chance at professional sports. The collision between father and son becomes a battle between holding tight and letting go, between dignity earned through suffering and dreams deferred too long. Rose absorbs the fallout, tested by Troy's mounting frustration and anger.

Watching deferred dreams and fractured family bonds play out on stage gives you a reason to watch the family's reactions as closely as their arguments. Wilson transforms everyday conversation into poetry while keeping the grit of working-class survival. The performance reveals why critics view this as essential American theatre.

You could feel every word land because theatre gives these conflicts nowhere to hide. Share a play that gives you plenty to discuss afterward. Find ticket options for Fences at The Forum Theatre in Wichita for the Nov 14, 2026 performance.
